April is recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month: a time dedicated to raising awareness, supporting survivors, and fostering conversations that challenge the stigma surrounding sexual violence. While awareness is important, this month is also about action: listening, learning, and committing to change in our communities. Sexual assault impacts individuals across all identities, backgrounds, and experiences. Yet, many survivors face barriers to speaking out—fear of not being believed, lack of access to resources, or concerns about privacy and safety. These challenges can be even more pronounced in smaller or rural communities, where anonymity is limited and support services may be harder to access. Creating a culture of support starts with how we show up for one another. This means believing survivors, respecting their autonomy, and recognizing that healing looks different for everyone. There is no “right” way to process or respond to trauma. For some, it may involve speaking out and seeking justice; for others, it may mean focusing on personal healing in a more private way. Both, and everything in between, are valid. Education is another key part of prevention. Understanding consent, boundaries, and communication helps build safer relationships and communities. These conversations can feel uncomfortable, but they are necessary. When we normalize discussing consent and respect, we contribute to a broader culture that prioritizes safety and accountability. At the same time, it’s important to acknowledge the resilience of survivors. Their strength is not defined by what they have endured, but by the ways they continue to move forward—whether that’s through seeking support, setting boundaries, or simply getting through each day. If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual violence, you are not alone. Support is available, and reaching out can be a meaningful step toward healing.
